Making Together: Crossing Borders + Connecting Communities

How can we proactively leverage the culture and creativity of maker spaces as a community engagement tool to collaborate, educate, and champion equity and inclusion? Take action and join this movement through a unique collaboration between the CITRIS Invention Lab at UC Berkeley and Innovaction Gym maker space at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.  We are seeking a cohort of dedicated, passionate, creative students (undergraduates and/or graduates) from all disciplines to apply to participate in this exciting and rewarding program.

Throughout the course of this semester students will meet and work with students at the Tecnológico de Monterrey.  Meetings will take place over video every two weeks where students will collaboratively develop physical prototypes for designs focusing on addressing issues germane between the cultures of the United States and Mexico as lensed through academic makerspaces.  Relevant topics include borders, immigration, walls, indigenous languages, educational tools in makerspaces.

Later students will meet in person to finalize designs and share experiences and learning from each others practices. In May, Tecnológico de Monterrey students will visit UC Berkeley.  Similarly, selected UC Berkeley students will get the opportunity visit Tecnológico de Monterrey in August. Support for travel is provided as part of the selection process.

Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in leading work that literally cuts across borders and expands the ecosystem of making across differing cultures.

Participants will work closely with leadership from the two universities:
